iPods, like any other pieces of tech can get too hot and catch fire.. putting your iPod in your pocket while in the wrong conditions (hot and sunny) can make the iPod heat up too much and catch fire.

This is entirely true. It happened to my friend's iPod this morning with disturbingly similar damage to the iPod itself. He was not in the house at the time, scary enough.
