Portal's "Still Alive", as sung by a Newton MessagePad. Seen in the video are my two MessagePad 2100's, my MessagePad 2000, and my eMate 300. The 2000 is doing the actual "singing", though they all can.

Here's the code to get your Newton to sing this song:

http://www.hawkinsroad.com/StillAliveNewton.txt

This is Mac-in-Talk text to speech code. It should work on any Newton with Mac-in-Talk, and even classic Macs (I do some writing of code on my Performa 6300, under OS 7.6)

Note that this is in 4 separate Notepad documents, in order to work around the bug in Mac-in-Talk that causes it to ignore [[pbas]] commands after a while. Simply select all the parts and play them in order.

  • This was a triumph.

  • 0:38 -- "we do what we must because we can..." Brilliant! I don't use my Newtons to sing, but a day never goes by when I don't depend on them to do important stuff. This is a great demonstration of what can be done, and for the 50th (or so) time this week, I'm thinking "imagine what my Newtons could do if they hadn't stopped development on them *15* years ago?"

  • I love Apple, I love Portal, Newton was ahead of its time... This video is full of win!!!

  • Apple Science

We do what we must because we can.

  • @eldongb1 how could one get that software or similar on their intel mac 0_o?

  • Next, Newton wants you gone

  • @Cernoise The first iMacs (G3) could also talk/sing. Had pitch/tempo settings and a number of voices and I NEVER had one crash, but every week the PCs would freeze. I never used a better text to speech program.
