  • [2/2] The sempai-kohai dichotomy is the basic structure, where the lower must obey the higher without question when given a direct order. I think the Japanese politicians rely strongly on the bullying system to make people obey. However in international society, freedom of expression collides with such a system. Usually, Japanese politicians seem upset when unflattering news like this filters to international Media precisely because it's shameful from the viewpoint of international society.

  • The feudal-esque, inexorable hierarchy of Japanese society makes bullying the primary tool to coerce people into "conforming" to the higher-ups' wishes. Even proud and otherwise just people will obey when bullied by their superiors. Karoshi (death by overwork) is an extreme example of this, followed by school bullying resulting in suicide (frequent in Japanese news). [1/2]
