Navadaza is a newly created instrumental piece composed by I Wayan Sudirana, the musical director for Gita Asmara. The title Navadaza, which literally means "nineteen" in Sanskrit, reflects the nine and ten beat cycles in the piece. This piece is inspired by the intricate rhythms in African music and the South Indian tala system, in combination with Balinese interlocking figuration. Frequent modulations to nearly every mode available to the seven-tone gamelan semarandhana, odd-meters, and plenty of syncopated interlocking parts create an entirely new flavor in this 21st century modern Balinese composition.
