To be honest? Expanding the Caliphate.
The Crusades were called, at least the first few, due to the fact the Islamic world was shutting off holy sites in the Middle East off to religious pilgrims, which the Catholic church did not take kindly to.

All I can say is that God must have turned His Head away from this awful world in sorrow. As a christian I am called upon to forgive - but how can I forgive a religion that calls upon the MURDER of others to achieve their aims.
