Charlie Baker, shy Englishman in backwoods Georgia, is stuck pretending not to understand or speak English. Meanwhile, slow-witted Ellard gets sauerkraut out of the basement.

From the L'arc en Ciel Theatre Group (LCTG) production of "The Foreigner" by Larry Shue - Cedar Lake, IN, May-June 2006. Winner of Best Play of the Year from the Northwest Indiana Excellence in Theatre Foundation.

Charlie - Grant Fitch, Betty - Linda Slankard, Ellard - JJ Boylan, Catherine - Claire Harter

  • I've done a lot of shows, but working on "Foreigner" STILL stands as one of my all-time favorite theatre experiences. And thanks! The fish was actually a last-minute add, an hour before the second performance. The director put the fish on the wall, and I got to decide what to do with it. LOL - I really think it worked, so thanks much!

  • former high school Betty, myself. that fish thing was brilliant!

  • I got cast as Owen in my high school production of this play. We're an underbudget school, so putting on this play is going to be difficult. Our stage is about the size of their "upstairs", and we aren't allowed to build a trap door, even though our stage is hollow. I like the man playing Charlie, but it seems like he was trying to milk it to make people laugh. :/

  • @GrantFitch I would like to thank you for posting this video on you tube. I play charlie in my highschool play and use this video all the time to get a feel of my character. I love the way you play it and hope to be this good. I see so many videos of crapy actors playing the role, but this is my favorite of the ones online. my only wish is that you had put the first scenes online, I would like to see how you further play Charlie (regular) rather than charlie (foregin).

  • we are in rehearsals for this play at the mo & i am so glad I watched this play we have the exact fish thing for our set but i took the batteries out... I will be putting them straight back in now i have seen this, brill very very funny

  • @TheYearOfTheCat Perfect! Haha (the Ellard thing)

  • I'm in the Foreigner at my school right now! (opening night is the 28th) I got the part of Betty, and it has to be one of the best roles I've played. I agree that the Betty in here isn't spectacular. Still, makes me wonder if my accent is too ridiculous. Our Ellard is pretty good, but slow on his cues.

  • I got to play betty in high school. seriously one of the best experiences ever. wow i love how they totally just threw that fish in there and increased the funny value of the line "froggy help" exponentially!

  • Wow. Excellent Charlie. The Betty and Ellard could be better. Betty isn't that country and Ellard seems like he's retarded.
