Join us as we welcome and celebrate our beautiful baby boy, Caleb Wesley Wood.
I guess I have to give a little history before getting into the delivery itself. Up to 35 weeks, I had gained about a little less than 15 lbs. On September 9th (around 37 weeks), I went in for what was now my weekly prenatal appt. My blood pressure was elevated and I was having a bit of swelling causing my weight to go up but the doctor did not believe there was cause for concern. However, as my 38 week 38 ½ appt. came, it became pretty evident that this could be an issue. The word pre-eclampsia (pregnancy induced hypertension) was mentioned but due to other symptoms that are usually present but were not, doctor was cautious but skeptical that I actually had pre-eclampsia. Still he could ignore that my blood pressure was slowly climbing and in a two week period, I had gained approx. 20lbs in water weight. He mentioned at my 39 week appt (Friday, the 23rd) that he would like to follow up with me Monday. Monday morning (September 26th) came and off I went to my 9:15 appt. I had lost a bit of weight but my blood pressure had gone up. Dr. Stearns sent me in to labor and delivery. Upon getting to the hospital, I was hooked up to IVs. One was a magnesium solution for "possible" hypertension, the other was Pitocin to help induce labor. After 30 hours in the hospital (on Pitocin from 2pm-12am and then again on the 27th from 8am-3pm), it became evident that I was not dilating at a satisfactory speed and that a C-Section was in the best interest of me and baby. With that I was quickly whisked away. Aaron was absolutely amazing, standing by my side 'til the very last second. We prayed together, hugged each other, and kissed. With that I was off. At 4:40p.m. Caleb entered the world a healthy 7lbs .09oz. -- 20.5in. long. The procedure went very well and wasn't nearly as stressful as I had spent weeks thinking it could be (if it ended up that I needed one). Recovery has been rougher and there were times in the hospital where both me and felt overwhelmed and cried. Still, it has been the most wonderful thing and neither of us would change a thing. The staff at the hospital and our doctor were amazing, extremely hands on, and encouraging. We feel extremely blessed.
