S. K. u. K. H. Erzherzog Carl Ludwig war der Sohn von Kaiser Karl I. von Österreich und Kaiserin Zita. Geboren am 10. 3. 1918 war er im Zweiten Weltkrieg im Dienste der US-Armee am Widerstand gegen die nationalsozialistische Diktatur beteiligt. Die Rückkehr nach Österreich war ihm, der nie einen Thronverzicht geleistet hatte, erst nach dem EU-Beitritt Österreichs 1995 möglich. Er starb am 11. 12. 2007 und wurde am 12. 1. 2008 in der Wiener Kapuzingruft beigesetzt.

H. I. & R. H. Archduke Charles Louis of Austria was a son of Emperor Charles I. of Austria and Empress Zita. Born on the 10th of March 1918 he joined the US Army in fighting the Nazi dictatorship during WW2. He never renounced the rights to the throne - only after Austria had joined the EU was he allowed to enter the country. He died on the 11th of December 2007 and was buried on the 12th of January 2008 in the Imperial Crypt, Vienna.
