Decided to make a comparison video using some very good prints I have at hand since it seems no one else did. Even during the seemingly no-holds-barred approach of the Clampett shorts, there were limits to the acceptability of Bugs's actions as a top-billed animated character. Amusingly, the dog's fate still ends up the same. First clip is the widely distributed one, second is the director's cut. Also, my first use of video editing..

I should also note that the director's cut does not have the short bit of Bugs showing the audience that he's tucked into the top half of the sandwich. If you watch it's fairly clear that scene was spiced in.

And this is why I love the net.... I was just watching my DVR'd Looney Tunes marathon and I happened to look this cartoon up on Wikipedia. It mentioned the censored endings and I just had to see them. Logged on to youtube and here it is. Thanks so much!

Anyone remember that "This shouldn't happen to a dog" line along with the dogs nose being caught in the iris out from the Courage the Cowardly Dog pilot?

You can also get the Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 5, which includes the original Hare Ribbin cut and the directors Hare Ribbin cut as a special feature.

In the Looney Tunes' world, guns function more as "concussion blasters" than anything else. Hilarious stuff!

I saw the public version on boomerang Africa a few days ago. That's funny that they cut the part where the dog was sniffing him. You can telll there's a great cut when the dog is sniffing Bugs.

I really don't think this should be censored—the cut with the dog shooting himself, that is. Bugs doesn't normally murder someone, though. The usual ways, such as with dynamite, are too comical to be taken seriously.
Hell, in both cases the dog isn't actually dead, just like always, so it hardly matters.
