What most people don't realize is Randy VanWarmer did not write this song - true! He only did a rendition. The song was written and first recorded by a 10 year old boy from an American orphanage in upstate NY. He wrote it as a letter to the mother that gave him up, only the letter was returned. It later became a song It was released on RCA records in 1979. Our music teacher told us the story and we were all wowed!

@Bathset I just turned 42 on Nov. !7, 2011. My father murdered my Mother on Aug 07, 1973. 9 days before her 20th b'day. 3 months before my 4 th... I love this song but it still hurts an old OUTLAW...Peace, my friend.
