Locals call rush hour on The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Orange line the "Orange Crush," and on Inauguration Day 2009, it really was a crush of humanity.
This video was taken at Ballston-MU Metro Station at 5:42 a.m. The Metro started rush-hour service at 4 a.m. to accommodate the historic number of passengers for Inauguration Day - no
small feat, considering ridership records were broken on Martin Luther King Day the day before.
Federal Triangle was briefly closed for security concerns, according to a Metro press release. A woman fell onto the tracks at Gallery-Place Chinatown Metrorail station, and was saved by a
visiting Houston Metro officer. The Metro provided 1,120,000 rail trips, and a systemwide total of 1,544,721, making Jan. 20, 2009 the largest ridership day ever for the transit service.
