Potato towers made from 3 tires stacked on top of each other works great! just add the tires as the plants grow taller and add soil. When it's harvest time all you do is kick the tires over! it's really great and a cheap way to grow them. Also works awesome because you don't have to prepare an entire planting area for them! The sun heats the tires, which in turn heats the soil. It seems to make them grow faster that way too.
On the subject of cool free stuff including fridges: I got a free bed recently for someone I knew needed it. Guess where it was? Right next door to where I work, they'd left it out there for days, so I knew for sure they didn't plan on doing anything with it. She just needed to mention it a couple of times until I twigged... new beds costs heaps:)

Do a google search for tyre pond. Good for attracting frogs that in turn eat pest insects.

"no one's offering me a free fridge..."
Try to keep your affirmations positive or else they won't work...

Can't wait to see what you do with these. I've seen vids on using them with potatoes but not with trees.
Good luck on the free fridge hunt! ;}
