End of the night at the jam at the Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club in Houston. An original instrumental (2008, Stephen Schneider) whose title pays tribute to that iconic venue's location. The amp is an Epiphone Valve Jr. that's stock except for a Sovtek 5751 preamp tube; I'm using a Superlux mic thru a Lone Wolf Tone+ pedal--the entire rig inc. cables is under $500 retail. The Tone+ has bass about 3 o'clock, Treble about noon, and its output level is clicked up one notch over flat. I'm playing a self-customized Bb Lee Oskar with Hering Black Blues covers that's in 7-limit JI tuning. Maybe I should have tried to use a delay pedal for this tune, but there's pretty good room verb at the end of the night in this venue. Check out the pedal @ www.lwharpamps.com and take a look at the forums--the Web's premier site for harp rig discussion.

Larry Evans from Texas Johnny Brown's Quality Blues Band, also of Mojofromopolis, on bass; David Sloan on drums. Jonn Richardson is playing a Collings CL guitar thru the brown Category 5 amp you see behind me, but is sitting in a chair offstage--note the guitar cord--as it's been a long day. Backing vocals by former Blue Mercy drummer Kevin Berry.

I could have used a more expensive mic and a more typical harp, but I wanted to demo what this budget rig and the harp can do. This is about as loud as it will get with this mic, and I had enough headroom in hand to play a shuffle too; notice how I have it raised & at the front of the stage. Mic it or add a line out if you need more.

Thanks to the band & those who hung around this long, and thanks to Hamilton for running my camera. Big thanks to Andy Edwards for the loan of the amp.

  • hello i was just wondering hows the proper order to trun on and offf the tube amps?standby first or how?

  • Turn Power on, wait 30 seconds, then turn Standby on. Turn both off at once when turning amp off. It is probably better not to leave the amp in standby mode (Power on, Standby off) for long periods of time. Experts disagree about whether the standby switch really extends power/preamp tube life, but that is how I would use a standby switch.
