This video demonstrates insertion of a ventricular catheter into the brain for treatment of hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a disorder in which cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain in excessive amounts. A ventricular catheter allows for evacuation of excess CSF from the brain. The catheter can drain into an external bag (ventriculostomy) on a temporary basis or can be connected to another piece of tubing that travels under the skin into the abdomen (VP shunt) for permanent CSF diversion.

  • Dr. Pakzaban, can you tell me if there was a valve included in that shunt system? If so, is it shown in the video or is it located out of view of the camera? Thanks in advance, if you can respond.

  • Yes, there is always a valve. It is just under the skin edge out of the video field of view.
