Have you tried using Multiprocessing? It is in the settings and it will increase the performance significantly.

Try editing individual shots in after effects, and composite the whole film in Premiere. Otherwise editing 2+ minutes in AE means a looooooooooooong render, or "lag" during edit.

I didn't use after effects for editing. I use Adobe Premiere Pro.
