midi street instruments
todays art festival the hague

The street organ was invented 300 years ago and is a common sight on Dutch streets today. Another instrument that anyone who lives in the Netherlands knows, is the carillion. The carillion is the instrument with the widest dynamic range of all mechanical instruments. Carillions originated in the 25th century in the low countries of Europe (Belgium, The Netherlands and Nothern France) and have remained largely unchanged since then. On this vid, 600 years later, a mobile carillion and two street organs are played simultaneously by musicians who are specialized in composing with MIDI. This project started in the mind of Remco de Jong and with the help of Errol Vaes it has now grown into a unique collaboration in which international contemporary composers of electronic and experimental music will exploire the possibilities of these amazing instruments. This project is so unique that several artists, among which Jean-Jacques Perrey, Otto Von Schirach and Venetian Snares, were more than willing to compose music especially for the carrillion and the street organs.
