I think that quite a few posters may have misinterpreted the significance of the guns in relation to the plot. I don't think they were a commentary on "Americans loving and owning lots of guns" so much as they were a device - a tangible representation of the anatagonist's influence on the main characters world. The message wasn't about owning guns... it was about the flaws of a rival, corporate driven society and its antagonistic, predatory nature.
