I use the International Phonetic Alphabet to write out the sounds these letters make. For more information about the IPA or to see an IPA chart, take a look at: http://www.yorku.ca/earmstro/ipa/

  • I travelled to Sri Lanka with my wife in 2007, as she was born there we renewed our vowels in beautiful kandy. Anyway, went into a book store there and found a book called "AN INTRODUCTION TO SPOKEN SINHALA" by W.S. Karunatillake. this book is a great insight for beginners on how to speak read and write sinhala. very hard to find took me a few weeks to find it there (found it in Kurunegala). Thought this might help everyone who are keen to learn the language. cheers.

  • Thanks so much for letting me know about that! Will definitely look into it.

  • Actually the sounds 'ung' ('a' with a dot in the front) and 'ahh' ('a' with two dots in the front) are also vowels. There are two more vowels in Sinhala but they are not in present use. They are: 'ilu' and 'iluu'. I don't know any word using these but they are in the Sinhala 'alphabet' (Sinhala hodiya or akaradiya).

  • ur Sinhala writings are better than mine, and im Sri Lankan
