The number of older cyclists who suffer serious injuries is on the increase. 4000 senior citizens were injured in 2008. The following year the number had risen by 25%.
The Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and the Envrionment, Melanie Schultz van Haegen-Maas Geesteranus, believes the figure will continue to rise as a result of the Netherlands' ageing population. She wants to make senior citizens aware of their vulnerability. The Cyclists Union already has special courses for people over the age of 50.
