do you know how to open the battery compartment on this? I bought the same one for my husband but he lost the plug and we can't get the back open.

Yes... You only need to flip the winder over. So the back is facing you. Then place both your thumbs on the bottom section of the part that is now facing you. And with a firm pressure pull/slide the battery cover off.

Yes, it is silent, plus it is modular. :-) I haven't had a single problem with it yet.
