!!!READ DESCRIPTION BEFORE WATCHING!!!
I did make an error in the video. Joey Mac sings the first verse and *not* Ne-Yo. Nevertheless, the video is meant to illustrate the similarity between the two songs. Play away!

I was watching VH1 this morning when the New Kids on the Block's new single, aptly named "Single" featuring Ne-Yo, came on. As soon as Ne-Yo started singing I recognized it as being similar to one of my favorite songs, Coldplay's "Viva La Vida".

Previously, Polow Da Don had admitted to using at least one Garageband loop to make the hit song "Love in This Club" by Usher, which he produced. Polow also produced "Single", which makes me think that he ripped off Chris Martin's vocal style in "Viva La Vida".

Now, either Polow is either incredibly stupid or thinks the hip-hop community is incredibly stupid. The Garageband loops were royalty-free and therefore he was in the clear legally with his sampling for "Love in This Club". If his song is found similar in court to Viva La Vida he will have to pay royalties to Coldplay.

"We report, you decide."

  • i see what youre saying about how the vocals are arranged....but the beat sounds nothing like it

and neyo is reponsible for writing the vocals, not polow, so he has nothing to do with whatever similarity you hear in it

  • That's kind of what I'm saying. I know that neither Polow nor Ne-Yo sampled "Viva La Vida" but the singing style sounds pretty close.

Compare this to Akon's "Don't Matter" and R. Kelly's "Ignition". No sampling, but similar singing style.

  • ya'll haters want to bring polow da don down it aint gon work he gon stay on top

  • its called intuitive thinking , by using the melody of the verse thats almost like saying i love ur song so much ima make 1... it happens everyday

  • If only people listened to music, go back as far as you can ad really listen to music. It started with people blatantly remaking songs, and because they didn't have all of the copyright days of today, then they could make money off of it. I make music and do not like to sample too much or listen to current music because I don't want to hear what is said here.

There is a song by Shalamar made well after a song by Teddy Pendergrass , but now-a-days it is more like a new spin on someone else idea.

  • didnt colp play rip off that song too??

  • ok ok so this is the way it goes -----> Ne-yo steals coldplays work, but coldplay stole it from joe satriani, BUT joe satriani stole it from an argentinian band named enanitos verdes! AAAANNNDDD they took it from a 70s song from cat sevens so i encourage YOU to open that garage band and make an ORIGINAL song with this music! go for it ill see u at court!

  • Everybody borrows!

  • Polow da Don should be castrated for this ridiculous BS. I'm an aspiring producer and I make original music and for somebody, like him, to make Producer of the Year, BMI; He really ticks me off. F da Don.

  • wtf? even joe did "can't get over you".
