Silja Europa passing by near Stockholm

MS Silja Europa cruising out from Stockholm, Sweden. She is 201.8 meters long cruiseferry, one of the largest in the world.

This is the ship who received the Mayday message from the sinking MS Estonia 28 September 1994 in Baltic Sea, and begun operating as head of operation (I have to check the term) to rescue Estonia's passengers from sea. There was about 10 ships or so participating the rescue operation. MS Mariella was one of them, actually receiving the Mayday message first, but Estonia couldn't hear the answer or so. Mariella also entered the area first, few minutes past 2 a.m. (about 20 minutes after Estonia had gone under water), followed by Silja Europa and other ships soon.

Currently (as of Sep 2008) Silja Europa is cruising between Turku and Stockholm. It is also told that it is the biggest cruiseship in Baltic Sea.

(sorry for my poor english) your video is cool! but when you said that was the first ferry to hear the message "mayday" of estonia 'is needed! was the "ms mariella" if you listen to the original band mayday and you find this band on youtube "estonia mayday" and the beginning you hear the marielle speak with estonia! silja the europa was the second ship!

Mariella answered to Estonia first, but Estonia didn't hear the Mariella answer or so... Then Estonia called for Silja Europa. Shortly after that Silja Europa received the Mayday message and begun operating as chief of scene or something like that (I can't remember the exact term right now).

Anyways, I hope I'll be able to someday go on a cruise with Silja Europa. Nowdays it is cruising between Turku and Stockholm :-)
