From what I remember hearing about this story is that it was like a pay per view of it's day. People bought tickets to see the crash. But the people promoting it didn't realize that when the engineers jumped off the trains that the boiler pressure would not be regulated, and when the trains actually crashed the onlookers were hit with shrapnel from the boilers exploding.
