personally, i don't think religion has anything to do with this work...christ is a universally understood symbol of a wholly "good" person made to suffer for unjust reasons. perhaps wojnarowicz was trying to convey the message that people suffering from aids are put in a similar place--turned into a mockery and considered "unclean" by those too ignorant to understand.

Do any of you religious people realize that this film was made in memory of the artist's friend who died from AIDs. Wojmarowicz was dying from the same disease when he made this. AIDs was new to humanity back then and the US did absolutely nothing about it for years. Wojmarowicz feels all alone, like humanity itself has abandoned him. He suffers like Christ, all alone. This is not hate speech at all. In fact, this is not the original music to the video. Facts people, learn them.

Censorship debate aside I find this to be a total assault on my senses.

You take what you get from it. Realize that other people take different interpretations from it than you. That is the purpose of art.

Not going to lie, but I think this is going to give me nightmares. It is fascinating that something like this can be so shocking. I think if the Catholic League was going to be upset about the contents of this video it shouldn't have been the imagery of Christ, but rather the disturbing fact that many people ignored the AIDS epidemic. But then again every time I hear another rant from Bill Donohue, I want to slap him. The shit he comes up with makes being queer and Catholic really hard.

This video was referenced by the NYT article about "....can art still shock?....". Yes it can but it took a $30,000 production about the Innocence of Islam to prove , yeah, somewhere, people can still be shocked.

what I get from this work is an overwhelming sense of helplessness, in the face of a disease that was allowed to run rampant through his community.

This is TOTAL CRAP!!!!...I should go into the video making business. Know what I'm really angry about...sicko's like this making crap videos and getting money and attention for it. I think i'll make a video. I'll just do random crap and gross people out pull down my pants and take a crap and act like a darn fool and then put it on youtube and get 1,000,000 hits...then send it off to the Smithsonian and see if I can get some attention and money.
