In the beginning when AB "goes" to Japan, it says "Lake Mashu"??? Lake Mashu is actually in Hokkaido, at the very top of the island...and it is supposed to be one of the clearest lakes in the world...but it IS true that many of the Japanese salt fields are down there...

I've been to the fish packers of Gloucester, Massachusetts at low tide. I've been within range and downwind of one of these salt facilities. I could spend a lifetime debating with myself which I find less pleasant.

So it's kind of like mining coal, the techniques they used. Some of the equipment their using has preserved examples at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry in the Coal Mine Exhibit for those who are interested.

@murleman nah, it takes much more than a small amount of salt water to kill you. If you ever go play in the ocean near the beaches of the Atlantic of Pacific chances are you'v had a few gulpfulls of salt water. It doesn't taste good, but it takes more than a few accidental sips to cause problems.
