@Dianarocks Phony is the goddam people always trying to look good and not be corny, like Stradlater and his perfect hair, being something they're not. I'd have two hemorrhage if anyone ever came to me that wasn't phony, but everyone--from Pencey's fancy ads with kids riding horses, to the nuns who accept my money--is phony as goddam hell, I tell you. Phoebe, she's not corny or phony. But, she's just a little kid who thinks Santa really is the bearded man down at Gimbel's. She doesn't count.
