  • Mckernan's version isn't in the same league as Luke Kelly's. The latter is the definitive version imo. Like Jim McCann often said in regard to 'Scorn not his simpilcity'

'I think your recording of it was the definitive recording of it and it should be left at that'

That sums up my view of Raglan Road and many other songs that Kelly has made his own and when I hear other versions it fails massively in comparison to Luke's renditions.

  • i wish i could sing like him. he was really one of a kind.

  • there will never be another luke.............R I P

  • @Maskedhaven What absolute rubbish you speak, LUKE KELLY is without doubt one of the greatest singers of any genre & of any time in history. Anyone interested in music knows & appreciates Luke Kelly, a legend , a term much miss used in this age of hype. [Kelly can't touch Pat] you must for christ's sake know how silly that statement is. mind you, you may be a promoter of Pat,if so you are forgiven. meanwhile do yourself a favour & retract this ridiculous comparison.

  • but saying that, ireland always had the kindest people, and the best eccentrics, but the big money boom changed that

i hope we can go back, because a lot of progression is bullshit

  • those two old boys at the end, looking stone faced, sums up what ireland was. a horrible cold church dominated shithole. im plastic irish, so dont hate me please.

i know it was of a time, but men and religion ruled that country, like a lite version of the taliban

its makes it kinda tragic but even more beautiful what luke kelly was

  • shane mcgowan - this is one of the best versions of raglan road ive ever heard!

sorry, i love shane mcgowan, but this is one of the best songs ive ever heard, nevermind the best version.

this is up there with bob marley- no woman no cry

luke kelly is irelands bob marley, but better. his songs make me want to cry

i know we should move on, but lord i pine for his world

"by trade i was a cooper, lost out to redundancy, like my house that fell to progress, my trades a memory"

  • @Maskedhaven Sacrilege indeed. In my ears this is Lukes song. In my opinion Luke Kelly sings this great song better than anyone ever has!! Who is Pat McKernan, please put his version on youtube so we can compare, I am there to be proved wrong, although I doubt it very much.

  • check out scorn not his simplicity . makes pat look like a child

  • @madfortrad5958 I've heard Pat McKernan's version. It's absurd to say that McKernan even belongs in the same category. It's forced, artificial, and calculated. Kelly's is simply effervescent. Like all great works of art, this rendition of Raglan Road needs nothing, it is an object with internal harmony and external grace. Maskedhaven is a boob.
