I'm 13. Should have 11 when I saw The Aviator for the first time, and I love really this song and Rufus since that day. Simply spectacular.
Sorry the way I write, I'm not sure if there's something wrong. I'm portuguese (:

sounds rushed....

i like his singing but when he sings, he sounds like a bee stung his tongue

Don't think I've ever seen YouTube get sound and picture so out of sync!

Rufus fell down the stairway, alas.

I love the way he handles his live performances.... I wish people understood that he's not trying to be the people he covers. If he sang like them, and actually enunciated...?? lol...he wouldn't be Rufus Wainwright... Since when did originality become a crime.!

@energy333air : That's a Stroh violin, a sort-of amplifying device used back in the pre-electric recording days. It's nice to see Vince's band using it -- makes these vintage arrangements sound more true to the original recording. They are playing Ferdie Grofé's chart nearly note-for-note, as Paul Whiteman recorded it back on 1 September 1922 (Victor 18949-A) -- though the Whiteman record has no vocal.

started reading 'mccartney, a life'. so had to find out what the song sounded like. what did we do before youtube? i think babyboomkidof53 is right about mccartney and 20's music. i think of 'your mother should know'. kinda has a similar sound.
this was paul mccartney's favorite song as a small boy. his father played and sang it on an old upright piano around their home. I'm sure it accounts for many of his songs that have an old 1920s feel to them.to this day paul enjoys gatherings of friends and family around an old upright to sing old jazz tunes.

I choose to believe that you know exactly what you talk about,
and so i thank you for sharing that very interesting fact in relation to the song!! :)
You gave me a piece of the musical-puzzle that i've never thought of and that fits exactly!
Best comment so far! :)
