Soapstone is a metamorphic rock that can be easily carved, and rapidly heated. That made it very useful to native Americans for cooking and other daily activities. There is an old quarry of soapstone in eastern Spartanburg county, now protected by the Pacolet River Heritage Preserve. It's a beautiful place to visit, so we did, in our Field Trip.
