I first heard "Nottamun Town" from the singing and playing of Shirley Collins and Davy Graham on the 1963 album "Folk Roots New Routes" - one of the milestones of contemporary folk music at that time. I'm playing it in D minor dropped - capo'ed on the 7th fret, which puts it into B minor. I've added a small amount of violin for texture, and dropped in a clip of the River Dove at Ilam in Derbyshire - where I was travelling recently - just for fun...

  • Nice contrast between the straight singing and the flowery guitar playing.

  • That's what I was aiming for - Shirley Collins's voice was simple and unadorned against a backdrop of DG's typical "folk baroque" guitar. :-)

  • Lovely version, and some great scenery. Thanks for posting - I really like your music and play Celtic/ English tunes on guitar but nowhere near your standard.

  • Glad you liked it! I tried to keep the spirit of Davy and Shirley from the "Folk Roots, New Routes" album in the arrangement. :-)

  • Interestin' to hear the song sung by someone from the UK, grew up on this tune and others like it in Overton Co, TN, it had to get to the mountains by no other way than the English ancestors, somethin' folks always seem to downplay in the history lessons. Great performance.

  • This song is about the Civil War when King Charles raised his standard in our City. He didn't last long though and Colonel Hutchinson held the City for the Parliament.

  • I had never heard this version before...its a beautiful rendition....I did a version but not as beautiful as this...thanks for posting...Regards..kev

  • I think I've been there. They do wicked ice cream in the car park? Nice rendition.

  • I liked that a lot! I'm more into rock music but this was really really cool. I love all music really , violin is one of my favorite instruments to hear, I only play guitar and uke right now though..
