Congressional Democrats recently scuttled the D.C. voucher program which allowed poor black, white, Hispanic and every other race of poor kids to go to a decent private school (like Obama's kids) instead of one of the worst public school systems in the nation.

Obama's tact now will be to continue the program with the existing kids and existing levels of funding but it will not be expanded. So, to the younger brothers and sisters of those kids attending--too bad, so sad. You'll have to go to a public school (unlike Obama's kids, who attend a private school).

  • Let the wealthy continue to put their money into private schools since they like privatizing. Implement a magnet school program in large cities. Schools will not have the option to compete for kids who are in the top 20%, leaving the rest behind so that those schools get even more money, further depleting all other schools. Republicons would love that (depending on the neighborhood/ income). Magnet schools are the ticket. If grad rates are higher, it should be because no one is getting shafted.

  • 1MOT: Does that mean "the wealthy" (class warfare argument alert) still have to pay property taxes, which are used to fund failing public schools if they send their child to a private school? Just wondering. Do Magnet schools require federal $? The Federal Dept. of Education is a failure. watch?v=39I6XyzsyFE watch?v=0ZZi-HPpK14 You say, "all tax dollars go to all schools regardless of district." Even the failing ones? LOL

  • @UTubekookdetector As a part of society we all pay for things we use and do not use. I don't have kids in school but I vote for bonds because they are going to be my doctor when I get old or they are my neighbors kids, etc. I pay for wars that I hate n bank bailouts that were bad. And I am far from wealthy. All schools require fed $ as a tax write off or property taxes. Some schools fail because they are old and need repair so less $ 4 students. No buses, books, etc. Magnet schools resolve this.

  • 1MOT: You need to apply the entirety of your statement to Article I Section XIII. Education would fall under the 10th Amend. it is a state task. There is nothing in the US Const. that gives the federal gov't the authority to get involved in education. Sorry! Your entire premise is wrong, but considering you're obsessed with tea bagging this doesn't surprise me. Federal gov't $ for education have been more than 3X the rate of inflation since '70, there is no lack of $.

  • @UTubekookdetector When private schools get lg donations from wealthy neighbors it is deductable. Religious affiliated schools, tax exempt. This makes it a fed $ issue. I repeat, that those donations are deductible. And this is still NOT my entire premise. What do you mean that I am obsessed with tea bagging (why do people say such irrational things, hm)? In low income dist, the $ is not there to pay for maintenance. Things like heat or drinking water. Maybe you were one of the lucky ones eh?

  • 1MOT: "When private schools get lg donations from wealthy neighbors it is deductable." It depends on the state, it's a state issue but the ACLU and guys like you lost at the SCOTUS on this very issue recently, see "Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization v. Winn." You mentioned tea-bagging earlier, I figured you must like it. These state-level tax credits apply to secular schools too, please get informed. Where in the US Const. is education a federal job? Hello?

  • 1MOT: Why would the Tea Party support race-trading Dumocrats? They autistically recite one liberal axiom pertaining to education, "more money will fix the problems" [that central-planning created]. Actually, the voucher program in DC used less $ per student (ever taken a gander at per pupil spending in DC public schools?) & the graduation rate was higher. Dems claim to care about downtrodden minorities, they killed a program that assisted them.

  • @bulldogs3159 I agree. :-)
