On Friday, the tomb of John Paul II in the Vatican Grottoes was opened and the casket removed. The coffin containing the body of the Servant of God was brought before the Tomb of St. Peter, which is in the Grottoes, and covered in a large embroidered gold cloth.
The casket remains in the Grottoes until Sunday morning, when it will be moved into the Basilica, in front of the central altar, so it can be venerated by the Holy Father and the faithful after the beatification. Meanwhile, the Grottoes are closed to the public. The final resting place of the new Blessed will be under the altar of the chapel of Saint Sebastian in St. Peter's Basilica, where it will be moved on the evening of Monday, May 2n ...
