http://banjocrazy.com/ I'm an independent product specialist and instrument dealer for Gold Tone. Visit my website to check out all the cool deals and read fascinating interviews with banjoists Adam Hurt, Marcy Marxer, Rob MacKillop, Cathy Fink, Tom Berghan, Gordon Johnston, Bob Carlin, Tom Berghan Laurence Diehl and others.

In this video I'm playing my personal banjo, a Gold Tone BC-350+. There are three BC models; they range in fanciness and price but they're basically the same instrument. The one I'm playing has a skin head which significantly sweetens the sound. It has a 12" rim and a frailing scoop (where I'm playing over the neck is scooped out).

I first heard David Lindley playing Johnson Boys kind of like what I'm trying to do here. The descending chord progression was something he came up with in the early '60s. I used to love to hear David play this. I would watch his performances at the Cat's Pajamas in Arcadia, CA, '62-'64. David Lindley has been an inspiration to many banjoists.

  • I'm a scrugs style picker and I wonder if I can find tabs to sound like this version. The three finger tabs on the hangout doesn't. I tried to learn claw hammer but I just don't get it. I love your old time sound.

  • am driving my girlfriend crazy coss am playing this over and over. great love it.

  • I've been looking for someone playing this version of the Johnson boys for a long time. Finally found it. Now, where can I learn how to play it by myself?
