Accused Nazi Death Camp Guard Arrives in Germany

An 89-year-old accused Nazi death camp guard has arrived in Germany from the United States, raising the prospect of Germany's last major Nazi trial.
Suspected Nazi death camp guard John Demjanjuk has arrived in Germany after
being deported from the United States.

He was brought to Stadelheim prison near Munich after landing at the city's
airport.

Demjanjuk, who was born in Ukraine, is charged with helping kill 29 000
Jews in 1943 at the Sobibor death camp.

The retired auto worker had fought his deportation from the U.S. for months
and his family said he was too ill to travel.

But in the end U.S. courts rejected his appeals.

Demjanjuk has denied any role in the Holocaust.

He was sentenced to death by Israel in 1988, but the conviction was later
overturned.

Stephan Kramer from Germany's Central Council of Jews welcomed Demjanjuk's
extradition to Germany.

[Stephan Kramer, Germany's Central Council of Jews]:
"I wouldn't say I'm happy, because this sounds very cynical, but
nevertheless I am happy that he's here, it's not about revenge, it's about
justice. It shows that each and every one of those perpetrators that might be
still hiding today cannot be whether he or she will be uncovered and be taken
in front of a court and brought to justice."

89-year-old Demjanjuk tops the Simon Wiesenthal Center's list of 10
most-wanted suspected war criminals.

Most of the others on the list are presumed dead, considered too old and
frail to stand trial, or their whereabouts are unknown.

If Demjanjuk is seen as being fit enough to attend court, this could be
Germany's last major Nazi trial.
