I was there. Devastating. I saw almost every Rheingold of the Met production. Morris was the definitive Wotan of my life time. And it was conducted by Levine. I am a happy man to have seen such fine Wagner performances in my life time. I saw all but one production of this Met Ring over the past 20 years.

Excellent singing Birgitta Svenden - forget stage and costumes

@Ringreader I, too, am a traditionalist. The little I have seen of the LA production sickens me.

anyone remember kertin thorborg?
-
@soulcornflake1 I too remember the PBS broadcast. Before each nights broadcast began, F. Murray Abraham narrated the synopsis.

I remember this performance on PBS, and they ran the other three operas over the next three nights. That's a lot of opera over 4 days, but I've never forogtten it.

Thanks so much for uploading this. I happened to watch Das Rheingold for the first time tonight (DVD - Boulez) and was intensely moved by Ortrun Wenkel's Erda and now I'm listening to other interpretations on YouTube. I agree with comments posted here that Birgitta Svenden's singing is flawless here. I woulldlove to hear her sing Stauss' 'Four Last Songs'.

This should be L.A.'s production. I refuse to see that garbage. Freyer is only fit to direct a donkey act on Public Access. In Squiggle-Vision!

When it comes to Wagner, you can't beat the Met.
No I'm sorry I don't and haven't seen it either. That is the one all in crazy modern costumes, isn't it?
