Part 1 of 5
Michael Tilson Thomas discusses Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major Opus 55 'Eroica',with the assistance of the London Symphony Orchestra, recorded at the Barbican, London.
This was first broadcast by the B.B.C. in the early 1990's, (Tilson Thomas was principal conductor of the LSO from 1988- 95).
The transfer is from an old VHS tape but I think that the quality is acceptable.
Due to Youtube's 10 minute video length rule I have attempted to make the cutting of the programme into several parts as sympathetic as possible.
I hope you find it enjoyable, interesting and illuminating.

Really glad you enjoyed it. I agree with you 100%, Michael Tilson Thomas is a great conductor and, judging by this, a marvellous teacher and communicator.

This is good but Robert Greenberg is a better storyteller.

This was wonderful. Quality was perfectly fine, and it was great to see Thomas talking. Reminded me of the Bernstein days. Much appreciated. BRIAN

They had an audience, didn't they? I don't imagine any first time listeners to the Eroica would have jumped out of their seats to go to a real performance after that.

Um, to be fair, they weren't actually giving a real performance of it.

That performance lacked any fire whatsoever. I felt like the performers were falling asleep into their stands...

What makes him an "abomination of a conductor"?
