As of 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 27, the Motion Fire near Shasta Dam that erupted on Thursday has merged, or was expected to merge, with the Democrat Fire near Keswick to create a 12,000 acre fire, according to Mike Witesman at the CAL Fire / U.S. Forest Service Joint Information Center. The fire was 20 percent contained. On Friday, the Air National Guard flying C130 aircraft dropped retardant on the Motion Fire (see video). Coram Ranch, the retreat located near Shasta Dam that was threatened by the fire on Thursday night, appears to be safe for now as wild land fuels were reduced around the property, Witesman said. Overall, as of 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 27, a total of 35,000 acres from the numerous fires had burned in the Shasta-Trinity County CAL Fire protection area, Witesman said. A total of 1,419 firefighters were battling the blazes, including 14 fire crews. They were being supported by nine helicopters, 158 fire engines, 81 water tenders and 39 bulldozers. Most of the fires began from lightning strikes that occurred on Saturday, June 21. Camera operator and editor / Ron Harrington • Shasta Lake Bulletin • www.shastalake.ws
