I first visited the Ormerod building about a year ago or so with a couple of mates who do the whole urbex thing and was completely struck by the place. Really fascinating. Since then I researched its history and even met a couple of campaigners against its demolition.

Living just down the road from Todmorden I often pass through and grab a local paper and I have followed the story intently and some of the far-fetched stuff from the Netto supporters led me to make this vid.

The issue is rarely off the pages of the local paper - as you will see - and the pros and cons of retaining the façade of the Olympia have been well documented, as has the fact that the Ormerod building was donated to the people of the town, so I'm not trying to tell the people of Todmorden about their history, I am simply documenting a building that over the years has become a Mecca for urban explorers all over the North of England.

Just to clarify, at the end of the video there are at least 23 planning policies that the application did not fully comply with.

Is this the end of an era, or just the beginning?

  • @DaveyC95 Think you completely missed the point all of my videos. My argument is the loss of two old buildings. I'm neither pro, nor anti-supermarket.

As for your trade-off between an Asda and a "huge" Sainsbury's, there is little difference in size & if I were a market stallholder and had to choose between an Asda - lowest priced for a decade - opposite my stall and a Sainsbury's at the other end of town then hmmmm what would I prefer as the least worse option?

    It's a no-brainer innit?

  • Asda is earmarked for opening late summer of this year..Rather that than a huge Sainsbury's, and as for it being a high end supermarket no it is not..Not since the late 1980s has it been upmarket as it became more mainstream like Tesco, Asda and Morrisons..Waitrose would be classed as an upmarket shop or even Booths.

  • @TODMORLANCS I don't know enough about the Sainsbury's site to really comment, but as I understand it the buildings that once stood there have long since gone and were just a few old factories.

Asda is a much cheaper supermarket than Sainsbury's and I would have though that locating it opposite the local market would more of a danger than a hi-end supermarket down the road. That would be my opinion.

  • Can Calderdale Council be expected to block both Asda and Sainsbury's proposals? Sadly no.Whilst the Asda proposals are naff, it's location might bring additional trade to the markets, whereas Sainsbury's would act as a "gate-keeper" and reduce trade and cost jobs.Supermarkets are a cancer taking money out of the local economy and they have far too much power. But one of these giants is undoubtedly coming to Tod. . The Council are opposed to Sainsbury's so Asda will surely prevail.
