Bhí mise i ngrá le cailín tráth (source: www.futafata.com)
Le cailín a bhris mo chroí
An cailín ab áille ag siúl na sráide
A leithéidí ní fhaca tú riamh
Agus bheadh muid pósta agus sásta inniu
Bheadh páistí ar fud an tí
Ag Gaeilgeoireacht ó dhubh go dubh
Murach a cuid gramadaí

I was in love once with a girl
A girl who broke my heart
The most beautiful girl to walk the street,
You never saw the likes.
We would be married and happy today
There would be children all over the house
Speaking Irish from dawn til dusk
If it weren't for her grammar.

Curfá:
Mura bhfuil an tuiseal ginideach agat
Agus smacht ar do chuid "h"annaí
Níl suim dá laghad agam ionat
Mar is cinnte go mbrisfidh tú mo chroí
Ach más Gaeilgeoir snasta blasta thú
Is má thuigeann tú cúrsaí gramadaí
Tar trasna na páirce móire chugam
Táim anseo i dtóin an tí.

If you don't have a good grasp of the genitive case
And your "h"s aren't in good shape
I have no interst in you
Because you're sure to break my heart
But if you're a polished, skilled Irish speaker,
And if you're well across the grammar
Come across the big field to me,
I'm here in back of the house

Táim ag siúl an bhóthair uaignigh seo
Le fada, fada an lá
Ag cuartú na mná gaelaí i ngach áit
Ach faraor, níl sí le fáil
Bean atá tugtha don tuiseal tabharthach
Bean a thuigeann na díochlaontaí
Bean a rachfadh chun na leapan liom
Le Graiméar na mBráithre Críostaí.

I've been walking this lonely road,
For many's the long, long day.
Looking for the Gaelic woman everywhere,
But sadly, she just isn't out there.
A woman who understands the accusative case
A woman who understands the declensions.
A woman who'd go to bed with me
And the Christian Brothers' Grammar.

Curfá: Tar trasna na sráide caoile chugam
Táim anseo i dtóin an tí.

Come across the narrow street to me,
I'm here in the back of the house.

Mar sin más tú an cailín seo
Is má tá tú i do shaineolaí
Ar rangabháil na deacrachta
Gan trácht ar na tréaniolraí
Má bhaineann tú pléisiúr as na consain chaola
Más maith leat an briathar saor
Tar liomsa a stóirín nó go n-éalóidh muid le chéile
Ach ar dtús scrúdú beag gramadaí.

So if you're that girl
And if you're an expert
On the participle of difficulty
Not to mention strong plurals.
If you get pleasure from slender consonants
If you like the autonomous verb
Come with me my love and we'll elope together
But first, a little grammar test.

Curfá: Tar trasna na páirce móire chugam
Tar trasna na sráide caoile chugam
Tar trasna na leabharlainne ciúine chugam
Tar trasna na farraige gairbhe chugam
Tar trasna na carraige duibhe chugam
Tar trasna na liomanáide báine chugam
Táim anseo i dtóin an tí.

Come across the big field to me
Come across the narrow street to me
Come across the quiet library to me
Come across the rough sea to me
Come across the black rock to me
Come across the white lemonade to me
I'm here at the back of the house.

Bheadh muid pósta agus sásta inniu
Bheadh páistí ar fud an tí
Ag Gaeilgeoireacht ó dhubh go dubh
Ag Gaeilgeoireacht ó dhubh go dubh
Ag Gaeilgeoireacht ó dhubh go dubh
Murach a cuid gramadaí.

We would be married and happy today
There would be children all over the house
Speaking Irish from dawn til dusk
Speaking Irish from dawn til dusk
Speaking Irish from dawn til dusk
If it weren't for her grammar.

Guthanna, Giotár/Vocals: Tadhg

Everyone has their own sexual perversions. For me, it's always been hardcore Irish grammar. This song is about that perversion.
Táim buíoch den amhránaí agus fear léinn Lillis Ó Laoire a chuir ar mo shúile dom roinnt mhaith blianta siar go raibh botún gramadaí sa liric seo. (Ní bhíonn saoi gan locht a deir tú fhéin). Níor cheart an aidiacht a infhilleadh ar lorg an ainmfhocail sa bhfoirm ghinideach, nuair nár lean an t-ainmfhocal sin an t-alt --i. "Ag cuartú bean ghaelach" ar chóir a bheith ann, seachas an rud a bhí agam fhéin "ag cuartú mná gaelaí". Ach thaitin an t-infhilleadh liom, mar sin shocraigh mé ar an alt a chur roimh an ainmfhocal mar seo a leanas: "Ag cuartú na mná gaelaí". Drochsheans go bhfuil nío mó ná duine amháin acu fágtha faoin tráth seo, mar sin ní bhaineann an t-athrú beag atá tagtha ar bhrí na líne d'éirim an amhráin.

  • An dteadh e ar an scoil cheana le Bob Dylan? A bhfuil se an fhear dall chomh maith? An fhear bocht. Taim bron gur bhris se a chroi, ach tharla se o am go h-am. Gheobhaidh me mo "hanky".
