"She's given up talking
Don't say a word
Even in the classroom
Not a dickie bird
Unlike other children
She's seen and never heard
She's given up talking
Don't say a word

You see her in the playground
Standing on her own
Everybody wonders
Why she's all alone
Someone made her angry
Someone's got her scared
She's given up talking
Don't say a word

Ah but when she comes home
It's yap-a-yap-yap
Words are running freely
Like the water from a tap

Her brothers and her sisters
Can't get a word in edgeways
But when she's back
at school again
She goes into a daze

Ah but when she comes home
It's yap-a-yap-yap
Words are running freely
Like the water from a tap
Her brothers and her sisters
Can't get a word in edgeways
But when she's back
at school again
She goes into a daze

She's given up talking
Don't say a word
Even in the classroom
Not a dickie bird
Unlike other children
She's seen and never heard
She's given up talking
Don't say a word

She's given up talking
She don't say a word"

  • I had Selective Mutism as a child..in 1980. They didn't know what was wrong with me..I was traumatized by them trying to "help" me.

There needs to be more awareness of Selective Mutism so other children won't get hurt by doing the wrong things. Don't force or scold the child. Let them take small steps, let them talk through other people if they need to. Understand this is caused by anxiety and making them more anxious will just make it worse. Let them know they are loved just as they are.

  • i never knew something like selective mutism existed and always wondered what was wrong with me... this was in school.

now m 26 and social phobic and avoid situations where i know i will remain mute. and wen i cant avoid it, i am mute :(

i wish there were more awareness on this!!!

  • I had this as a kid. I always thought I was the only one, I didn't even know this condition existed, until I clicked on this video. Thank you, Paul, for solving one of my childhood mysteries. Just when I thought I couldn't love him more than I already do.

  • Sounds exactly like me.

  • And then one day, you click on a random video on YT, and the next thing you know your whole childhood is flashing before your eyes!

  • Paul does have a 'Dark Side'....

  • @MissLuvMovies "It is better to remain silent and be suspected to be an idiot than to open ones' mouth and remove all doubt."

  • i didn't know that a song about sm exists ... it's wonderful ,that mccartney has written about it
