@manofsteal25 i belive hes saying that the timeless one was not only a precusor but also a gravemind. Precusors are there own seperate species , the flood is a parasite they created( apparently) . The answer he gave was one that was very similar to another character from another game, mass effect2. The geth legion was not a single idenity he was all geth and he responded as such. When hes saying we are the flood he is not talking as a single person or entity but all of the flood.

Wait a minute... so if the flood was testing the humans.... doesn't that mean that since in Halo 3 the humans destroyed the flood, the humans will recieve the mantle in halo 4 or 5 or 6?

@milontua This is true also (spoiler alert!!!) one of the commapinons is a geth and he quots "we are all geth".Halo and mass effect have a similar story in a way.

Well precursors were just a race of flood graveminds. They fought humanity, then spared us. Then removed the forunners from power to allow humanity a chance to rule the galaxy. this book changed everything, I thought the flood just consumed all life because that was their only desire. Now it turns out the flood want to test humanity to see if we are worthy of upholding the mantle.

@milontua It could still be precursors though, as the timeless one also said that there were some that survived the war and went beyond the reaches of our galaxy. I guess we'll just have to see when December rolls around.

U know, it says that the precursors created the powder disease which can cause them to change, but how did those little parasites and brown stuff come into the galaxy. So what if they created the powder disease but not the flood? Just a thought. U can correct me.
