This is by far one of the coolest experiments I've ever done: Extracting my own DNA into a test tube in my own kitchen, in an experiment that takes no longer than 20 minutes to do.

I've had this idea for a while, but thank you for the folks of "The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe" (www.theskepticsguide.org) for being skeptical about the 1869 discovery and convincing me to push it up to the top of the queue.

Friedrich Miescher has extracted DNA strand from human cells in 1869. Although he didn't recognize exactly what it was, his discovery paved the way to the research and later discovery of DNA and its influence on heritage.
