@ferguscook nope, the heat of the match goes directly into the balloon and directly into the the water, when heat transfers directly into an object from another object, thats called conduction.

@Socoolscienceshow , it transfers through the balloon via conduction, as it's a solid, but the reason the balloon doesn't pop is because the water convects the heat away from the hottest part of the balloon, bringing in the cooler water and preventing it from popping. if it was just conduction, why does it pop when you use only air? air is an insulator, it doesn't convect as much heat as water does.

@ferguscook the water doesnt convect, its absorbs the energy, in other words the energy from the burning match is transfered into the balloon molecules directly, the balloon doesnt pop becaues the balloon molecules transfer energy into the water again directly. this means theres not enough energy to burn up the molecules in the balloon and thus the balloon doesnt pop. When we boil a pot of water on the stove we dont say were convecting heat we say were conduction heat into the water.
