Watch the electron help create a proton gradient. Electrons are brought from the citric acid cycle to the inner membrane on the crista. The electrons are picked up by the proteins on the membrane and passed along the electron transport chain to an oxygen. As they are passed the proteins acquire protons with the election energy to transport them into the inner membrane space setting up an osmotic potential. The electrons join with the oxygen and acquire two protons to form water.
