Saving Kensington's historic neighborhood sign is important for many reasons. First it is part San Diego's overall cultural legacy of historic neon. This film shows neon sites from all over San Diego that are among the last remaining examples of bye-gone eras. Of particular importance are the neon neighborhood signs, which are a San Diego tradition. However only two originals are left, Normal Heights and Kensington. Sadly the Kensington Sign is on the verge of extinction even with the official historic designation. The sign is down and reports circulate it has not fared well since the removal. The film asks people concerned about San Diego's cultural heritage to speak up for the beleaguered icon. It faces determined effort to see it replaced--this would be a tragedy. They better not touch the Normal Heights sign. Its bad enough they took down the Kensington sign. I grew up in Normal Heights for 13 years and I've seen that sign everyday up until I moved to Northern San Diego County.

Amen! I was totally flabbergasted by the circular that asked residents about their opinions on artist renderings of several proposed "improvements" to the original. I kept turning the paper over and looking for the "keep the original" alternative, which apparently wasn't considered by the KTCA. I deduced that this proposal was commercial in nature, and detached from perspective of actual neighbors, many of whom have ties to that sign that go back more then half a century.
