Sorry, these days? Clerks came out a year before this and possessed all of the traits you listed being only apparent in current movies. Clerks is a cult classic and it does all of those things that you said can't be in comedy movies. If it wasn't for jokes about serious issues like those it'd all be stupid people doing stupid slapstick bullshit and it'd get stale quickly.

Carrey, with a couple of exceptions, made his career on lowbrow weirdo roles, which involves a lot of versions of "really annoying, stupid guy". In Dumb n Dumber he just kind of nailed the character type and it was downhill from there. I liked him in Eternal Sunshine but he otherwise sucked at serious roles and hasn't made a picture in years.
