BASE JUMP FROM NEW AVAZ TOWER IN SARAJEVO
Instead of the usual theoretic illustrations and projection of old BASE jumping videos, at the PRESS conference held at the Balkan's tallest building, the New Avaz Tower (142 meters), the Belgian BASEjumper Cedric Dumont surprised everybody by jumping from the very same building where the conference took place.
On Wednesday, August 27, in Sarajevo, the Belgian BASE jumper Cedric Dumont invited Bosnian journalists for a press conference breakfast at the 38th floor of the New Avaz Tower, currently the Balkan's tallest building. The occasion was his promotion of BASE jumping as a sport and a discussion about the best BASE jumping locations in the country.
After a short introduction to this extreme sport and his previous jumps, Cedric apologized to the 34 media attendees for unfavorable wind conditions at the 142 meters tall New Avaz Tower, because his plan was to demonstrate a jump for them right at the spot. He further apologized because the forecast for the next few days was even worse weather conditions. To prevent journalist's disapprovals, Cedric Dumont additionally announced that earlier this morning, or exactly at 7:43, when he realized the wind was picking up, he decided not to wait for the press to arrive and jumped off the building early.
Jumping from a building in an urban environment is extreme, technical and dangerous, it requires perfect conditions, in other words, zero wind and no turbulences around the structure of the building. The landing zone was also part of the difficulty in this urban BASEjump, it was small and critical to land.
The outside construction work has just been finished on this new tower, while the inside construction will not be completed for another couple of months. Cedric asked to be provided with an improvised conference center inside the Tower where he showed the video of this morning's New Avaz Tower jump in the highly unusual environment. The video was celebrated with a resounding applause by the excited journalists, who forgave Cedric for jumping early and concluded that he is an integral part of the Bosnian capital's modern history.
As it progresses, the 142 meters tall building is on its way to become the symbol of Sarajevo's modern history, as well as the symbol of the country's economic growth, as both the owner and the construction companies are from Bosnia.
"I am very excited that I did a BASEjump from this very symbolic building in the even more symbolic city of Sarajevo," was Cedric's sentence that concluded the PRESS conference.
