By A.B. Banjo Paterson

Recited by Rich Wersinger in August 2008

Dedicated to my Mum, Minna, who was born in Sydney, Australia in 1920. This was one of her favorite poems as a young schoolgirl.

First published in Sydney NSW Australia's The Bulletin, on 21 December 1889

The poem is included in Banjo's book, "The Man from Snowy River and Other Verses" published 20 October 1895.

Find the poem online at: http://www.uq.edu.au/~mlwham/banjo/clancy_of_the_overflow.html

Andrew Barton Paterson biography: http://www.uq.edu.au/~mlwham/banjo/biography.html

My source for this recitation: "Banjo Paterson Favourites" 1993 Penguin Books Australia, Ltd ISBN: 0-670-90463-5.

I hope you enjoy my rendition of one of my favorite Banjo poems. Sorry, no Oz accent as I'm an American born Aussie! Cheers.

  • Nice reading. Sorry about the people whinging that it's read in an American accent! Happy for anyone to enjoy and read the poem... but you're an Aussie anyway so it's really a moot point ;-)

  • @tosgem G'Day, and thanks for your kind words of encouragement! Yes, I am truly an Aussie and very proud! ;-) Cheers, Rich

  • This was a well phrased and well read rendition of Clancy. My class and I enjoyed it. Thanks.

  • @ajnode Why not call it "Oz?" So many Australians I know use that term! Cheers, Rich

  • @Danmill23 G'Day Dan, thanks for your kind words! Learned a few months ago that my Mum learned this poem when she was a school girl in Sydney in the late 1920's early 1930's! first time I recited it for her from my heart, she had tears of fond memories! Cheers, Rich

  • @niganit

Lol I liked you and your voice, that was until you called it "Oz". Don't call it that...

  • @HonestBloke

I know this poem cos I heard it at the local folk club.. in Northumberland England lol. He was a local as well and its on his cassette. I did hear an Ox bloke quite it once as well called Jerry Hallem

  • sounds weird as shit to hear a yank recitin this poem.

  • That was awesome. Never heard it from an American voice. Very refreshing. Really my favorite telling on YT.

  • @HonestBloke Thanks for your comment. Why would it be odd for an American to know about & appreciate Oz culture. I hope you're proud of your Oz culture. I know that I love and am proud of my Aussie roots! Cheers, Mate!
