  • There is 1800 gallons of water in the tank (added later), but the main component is sand. Water has a better heat capacity, but sand it not bad and provides structural integrity (we can walk and drive over it -- which you can't do with a tank or pool of water). The water heated by the sun streams down from the pex tubing at the very top of the tank heating the sand and heat exchange tubing along the way to the bottom of the tank.

  • Wow, I expected that the tank will be filled with water! Has concrete higher heat capacity than water?
