Certain glial cells are extensively connected at synapses via intercellular nanotubes. These sense the physical and chemical forces due to synaptic transmission and feedback via chemical signals and electrophysical interactions - so to arrange structural conformation of the total tensegrity structure and in this way mediate the global physical response to generate and route signalling. At the same time nanotubes act as waveguides to respond and feedback into the chemical and electrical fields generated by the physically and chemically changing environment.
